Ford Gifts Explorer to Pope Leo XIV
Ford Motor Company recently created a one-of-a-kind 2026 Ford Explorer Platinum Hybrid designed specifically for Pope Leo XIV. The custom SUV was presented to the Pontiff at the end of February as a gift from Ford CEO Jim Farley and his wife, Lia. The vehicle was delivered during a private audience in Vatican City on February 28. According to Ford, the Pope plans to use the SUV to travel across the Vatican grounds. The project involved dozens of Ford employees who collaborated to design and assemble the unique vehicle, blending modern technology with personalized design elements that reflect the Pope’s background.
Built in Chicago With Local Roots
The Explorer was assembled at the historic Ford Chicago Assembly Plant, a facility that has produced vehicles on Chicago’s South Side for more than a century. The location is significant because Pope Leo XIV was raised just a few miles away in Dolton, a suburb south of Chicago. The shared connection between the automaker’s Chicago manufacturing base and the Pope’s upbringing inspired several of the vehicle’s custom design features. During the presentation in the Vatican, Farley also brought a photograph of the Chicago Assembly Plant team and handwritten letters from employees who contributed to the project. In return, the Pope blessed several rosaries for the workers.
Performance and Technical Features
Although customized, the vehicle retains the core engineering of the Explorer lineup. The Pope’s SUV is powered by a 3.3-liter V6 hybrid powertrain paired with a 10-speed hybrid transmission, offering a combination of efficiency and performance. To ensure compatibility with European broadcasting systems, the Explorer also includes a specially configured antenna for radio use within Europe and the Vatican. The vehicle features custom vanity license plates reading “DA POPE” and “LEO XIV.”
Interior Design With Symbolic Details
The interior of the Explorer includes several personalized touches that celebrate both Chicago and the Vatican. Seat tags incorporate the design of the Chicago flag, while the city’s skyline is embroidered into the center console. Additional engravings on the scuff plates depict both the Chicago skyline and St. Peter’s Basilica, symbolizing the Pope’s journey from Chicago to the Vatican. These design elements were intended to highlight the connection between the Pontiff’s hometown and his role as leader of the Catholic Church.
A Symbolic Gift
The custom Explorer represents a blend of American manufacturing and personal symbolism. Built in the city where Pope Leo XIV spent his early life and delivered to the Vatican, the vehicle reflects both technological craftsmanship and cultural pride. For Ford, the project demonstrates the company’s ability to customize vehicles for unique purposes while celebrating the people and communities connected to them.
