NYC's Last Crown Vic Taxis: A Final Farewell

In the ever-evolving landscape of New York City’s iconic yellow taxis, a few relics from the past have been holding their ground against the tide of change. The Ford Crown Victoria, a sedan that was once a staple of taxi fleets, has been gradually fading from the city’s streets since its discontinuation several years ago. However, amidst this shift, two Crown Victoria taxi cabs in the Big Apple are making a defiant last stand.

The Last of a Legacy:

The Ford Crown Victoria, a favorite among police departments and taxi cab services, has been slowly facing retirement across the U.S. In its stead, modern alternatives like the Ford Mustang Mach-E have taken over, even serving as taxis in the city for nearly two years. The New York Times reports that the very last Ford Crown Victoria taxi cabs in NYC are inching toward their proverbial grave.

Against the Odds:

Despite being 12 years old, these two Crown Victoria taxi cabs are still operational, defying the odds and the recommendations of the Taxi and Limousine Commission. One of them boasts an impressive 550,000 miles on the clock, while the other has logged 491,000 miles. Ravinder Sharma, the owner of the higher-mile sedan, remains steadfast in his determination to keep the classic taxi on the road.

The Battle to Stay Alive:

The Taxi and Limousine Commission suggests that both vehicles have surpassed the seven-year mark in operation and should be retired. However, the owners of these Crown Vics have been engaged in a persistent battle, skipping required inspections that could result in the seizure of their meters, rendering the vehicles unfit for service.

As a consequence, the drivers now find themselves summoned to administrative hearings to address violations. If they lose, the agency holds the power to remotely shut down their meters through wireless signals. The drivers face potential fines and the looming threat of license suspension. Despite these challenges, the drivers are unwavering, refusing to surrender their beloved Crown Vics.

The Driver’s Resolve:

Ravinder Sharma, reflecting on his attachment to the classic taxi, stated, “You know you are in a classic taxi. I love this car. I’m thinking if they allow me to drive, I drive. If they don’t, I take my Social Security and retire.”

In the ever-changing landscape of New York City’s taxi scene, these two Ford Crown Victoria taxi cabs stand as a testament to a bygone era. As the city embraces modernity, these resilient classics, with their devoted owners, continue to navigate the streets, embodying a nostalgic charm that refuses to fade away.
